Harveys of Hayle - New Book Published by the Trevithick Society
In 1960 the Harvey company commissioned a history of the Harvey family and company from Edmund Vale. Vale was a prolific writer and journalist, who had written similar histories for other companies. The Harveys of Hayle was finally issued in 1966 by the Truro house of Bradford Barton. It was a substantial hardback volume of over 350 pages costing 60 shillings. Only 1,000 copies were published and as a result the book has, over the years, become hard to find with second hand copies fetching around £70.
Last year the Trevithick Society was approached by Edmund Vale's son Robert with a view to re-issuing the book in a new edition. We have welcomed the opportunity to do so and the new edition should be available in October this year. It contains the entire text of the original volume plus additional information about the Harvey company after 1966, surviving Harvey atrtefacts, what survives in Hayle today, an updated bibliography and some additional photographs.
In order to make this pioneering book available to the widest possible audience, it will be published in a large paperback format at £19.99 with a limited hardback edition of 100 copies at £35.99. Like all Trevithick Society books The Harveys of Hayle will be distributed on our behalf by Tor Mark Press of St. Day. They can supply local booksellers or can be contacted direct on 01209 822101 or at Enquiries@willowbooks.co.uk
